APNewsBreak: Tribes raise $9M for sacred SD land

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? After months of high-profile fundraising that drew celebrities' attention and dollars, a group of Native American tribes has raised $9 million to buy a piece of land in South Dakota's Black Hills that they consider sacred, an official with an Indian land foundation said Friday.

The Indian Land Tenure Foundation president Cris Stainbrook told The Associated Press that the tribes raised enough money to purchase the land from its current owners. The foundation was one of several groups and organizations leading the effort to buy the land.

The deal was finalized Friday, which was the deadline for the tribes to raise the money.

The land, known as Pe' Sla, went up for sale after being privately owned. Members of the Great Sioux Nation have been allowed to gather there every year to perform rituals. The site plays a key role in the tribes' creation story, and members fear new owners would develop it.

Tribal leaders from three Sioux tribes ? Rosebud Sioux President Cyril Scott, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Chairman Charlie Vig and Crow Creek Chairman Brandon Sazue ? released a joint statement Friday, saying they are happy to be able to reclaim one of their sacred sites.

Those three tribes were the only ones to contribute to the purchase, Scott said. Tribal leaders would not say how much each tribe contributed to the purchase.

The three leaders said they exercised their tribal sovereign authority.

"It's a great day for Indian Country," Scott said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. Scott also said that all Sioux tribal members are invited to the land and that tribal leaders plan to form a commission to preserve the land.

More than $900,000 was raised through online contributions, said Standing Rock Sioux tribal member Chase Iron Eyes. His company, Last Real Indians, led the online effort.

Earlier this year, landowners Leonard and Margaret Reynolds canceled a public auction of the property after tribal members expressed outrage. The Reynolds' then accepted the tribes' bid to purchase the land for $9 million.

The couple has repeatedly said they will not speak publicly about the land sale and did not return a message from The AP on Friday seeking comment.

The fundraising effort drew support from several celebrities. P. Diddy tweeted about it as did Bette Midler, who also donated. Midler said she was "happy and proud" to have helped out with the purchase.

"I've been talking about it to my friends, tweeting to the world and donating through my foundation because I think it's important for the soul of our nation," she said in a statement Friday.

Actor Ezra Miller, who appeared in the recently released film "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," and music producer Sol Guy flew to South Dakota last month to film a nine-minute documentary-style video about the land that was used as part of an online campaign to raise funds.

The fundraising effort has been a monumental and controversial undertaking for the Sioux tribes. An 1868 treaty set aside the Black Hills and other land for the Sioux, but Congress passed a law in 1877 seizing the land following the discovery of gold in western South Dakota.

A 1980 U.S. Supreme Court ruling awarded more than $100 million to the Sioux tribes for the Black Hills, but the tribes have refused to accept the money, saying the land has never been for sale. There are Sioux tribes in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska and Canada.

Some members of the Sioux tribes didn't agree with trying to purchase the land. Bryan Brewer, president-elect of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, said his tribe did not allocate any money to the land purchase.

"I'm still against buying something we own, but I'm thrilled the tribes' are buying it. I'm very happy about it," he said.

(AP Photo/The Capitol Times, Michelle Stocker.)

(AP) ? Remember Roseanne Roseannadana? Or Emily Litella? Or Baba Wawa?

Younger generations might not recognize the characters popularized by comedian Gilda Radner. Nor might they remember Radner herself, an original cast member of "Saturday Night Live" who died 23 years ago and for whom a national cancer support group is named.

That's troubling to the Madison-area chapter of Gilda's Club, which decided to change its name in part because of concern that many don't know who Radner was. But the move prompted outrage from some Radner fans ? who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor ? and led other chapters across the nation to hastily reaffirm they have absolutely no intention of changing their names.

Lannia Syren Stenz, the Madison-area club's executive director, said her organization decided to change its name to Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin after it realized that most college students were born after Radner died in 1989.

"We are seeing younger and younger adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis," Stenz told the Wisconsin State Journal. "We want to make sure that what we are is clear to them and that there's not a lot of confusion that would cause people not to come in our doors."

Her comments angered some Radner fans, who let loose a storm of criticism on the organization's Facebook page.

"The only educating you're doing is teaching kids that when they die from cancer, their name will be erased from history in 20 years because the next generation doesn't know who they are. Way to give them hope!" wrote Mark Warneke, 44, a full-time college student in Arlington, Texas.

He told The Associated Press that taking Radner's name off the foundation was an insult to her memory.

Stenz referred questions from the AP to Linda House, executive vice president of the national group. House said there was no evidence that young people are unfamiliar with Radner and the name change was motivated by the desire to make the organization's mission clear. She called Stenz's comments "not accurate, period."

"Gilda Radner is very much a part of the fiber of this organization," House said. "There has never been an intent and there is no intent to lose Gilda as part of the organization."

Stenz's club held a ceremony Thursday to mark the name change, which will be phased in over the next month.

Radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986, sought support from The Wellness Community in California and wrote about her experience in her book "It's Always Something," a reference to one of her characters' catch-phrases.

Her friends and family started Gilda's Club in 1991 on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or switching to Cancer Support Community, House said.

The 56 chapters around the world deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, she said. Of those chapters, 20 are known as Gilda's Club, three are Wellness Community and 23 are Cancer Support Community.

Changing the chapters' names made sense to Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how different generations view the world differently. He said it could become harder for Gilda's Club to attract donations as fewer people remember seeing Radner on TV.

"I think we all want to keep our traditions alive," he said, "but there comes a reality in this case of what does this group represent and how do we raise money for it."

Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder, said he didn't like the name change but he understood it. He said if he had to break the news to his late wife she might ask, "Do they have to throw me out?"

"I'd say, 'It's not throwing you out, honey, it's getting more money.' And she'd say, 'OK, I guess if they have to, they have to,'" he said. "It's too bad. I wish it weren't so. But I understand."

The Wellness Center where Radner once sought support in Los Angeles was one of the groups that updated its name. Julia Forth, the marketing director of what's now called the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center, said people who get sick Google the word cancer, so it helps to have that word in the name.

Other organizations were adamant about keeping the Gilda's Club name. LauraJane Hyde, who runs the Chicago chapter, said her group has spent 15 years teaching people that Radner's name was synonymous with cancer support, in the same way people know what Starbucks sells even though "coffee" isn't in its name.

"A lot of people feel very passionately about the name," she said. "We will lose donations if we change it."

Radner remains a strong presence at the Madison-area club even without her name on the building in the suburb of Middleton. Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her Saturday Night Live characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana, out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella and speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters.

Lawyer: Lohan not drinking, on drugs at arrest

Paul Drinkwater/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images

By Mark Malkin, E! Online

Despite what many may be assuming about Lindsay Lohan's state of mind when was arrested on assault charges early this morning at a New York City lounge, her lawyer insists she wasn't under the influence.?

"I can tell you when I was with her (Thursday) morning; she was in great condition," attorney Mark Heller tells E! News. "She was certainly not intoxicated, certainly not under the influence of drugs. She was clear (and) lucid, her eyes were clear. No alcohol involvement whatsoever on this occasion."

However, Heller said he didn't ask LiLo if she had been drinking or doing drugs at any point during the evening. "It wasn't even brought up," he said, adding, "She was perfectly appropriate. And the police made note of that."

Everything we know about Lindsay's latest arrest

Lohan is set to face formal charges at a Jan. 7 arraignment, but Heller believes he'll prove her innocence before then.

"We are going to be working very earnestly to establish that no charges should even be lodged," he said. "(The police) have already made arrangements to get the video from the ... club, which hopefully will reveal some exonerating information. After that, they could just walk away from the case and decline to even prosecute."

See all of LiLo's many mug shots here

Asked how the "Liz & Dick" star is doing right now, Heller said, "She's sleeping. She was up all night long and went through a very rough ordeal."

Drew University Men?s Lacrosse Team Aids in Sandy Relief Efforts

Like so many other residents of the tri-state area, former Drew University men?s lacrosse team captain, PJ Martin C?04, saw some of the devastating effects of Super Storm Sandy first hand and looked to his former team for help.

Martin, a former teacher and coach at the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. located miles from the some hardest impacted areas of the storm, reached out to former Peddie School graduate and current Drew junior, Kyle Mariboe to see if the current team would be interested in helping out.

Head Coach Tom Leanos, who also coached Martin, was approached by Mariboe to see if he can enlist his teammates to join the relief effort. Within days Martin and Mariboe had a small army comprised of 31 Drew men?s lacrosse players and two coaches including Leanos to help with the clean-up.

?This Drew lacrosse program is a family,? explained Leanos. ?If one of our family members needs assistance, we?re going to figure out a way we can help out.?

The Ranger contingent helped clean-up, assist in demolition, remove furniture and drywall for about 10 homes in a flood zone located about one block of the Raritan Bay. The team divided into six groups with each group working under the direction of a previously existing group called, Team Pecyna, which stepped up and taken responsibility for civilian relief in Keansburg.

Martin now owns his own lifestyle apparel company called Uncommon Fit based in Hightstown and is spearheading a relief campaign called ?We Shore Will?. His apparel company and the campaign have been able to motivate different college age volunteers and young professionals to come down to help in Keansburg and have raised thousands of dollars that are directly benefiting organizations, residents and small business in the Raritan Bay area. The most notable effort in raising funds was at the recent Hope for Highlands concert helping raise an extra $5500 through t-shirt sales by his company.

?This was a life-changing experience for us and hopefully for the people down here as well,? said junior Mark Barus. ?I?m grateful we were made aware of this opportunity by PJ and glad we could help out.?

Although each Drew student-athlete was affected by Super Storm Sandy, the relief effort brought heightened awareness to all involved of how dramatic the hardship was for other communities and families in the Garden State. It also brought a true sense of what the Drew Lacrosse family is all about to the current-student athletes and alumnus PJ Martin.

Other individuals or organizations interested in volunteering in Keansburg may do so by emailing Shawn at Keansburgstrong@gmail.com for information. To see how and when other Drew University relief efforts are being made, join the facebook group ?Drew Disaster Relief?.

You can also purchase apparel from Uncommon Fit that directly benefitx the Keansburg community by visiting www.uncommonfit.com

Hello Hello

Obviously i'm new to the site, but I'm far from new to role-playing. Found this place accidentally while browsing google, and I figured I would take a look see. I do have some questions, how active is it, some of the top rp's on the home page seem pretty old or deadish, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. I'd also like to know how good are the average RP's here, I'm generally apprehensive about joining communities like this due to things like Gaia and Neopets which are over saturated with brain numbing rps, and I'd like to try an avoid that.

Thanks for your time :D

Sweet Krispy Kreme worker surprises man on quest for rejection

A man's quest to overcome his fear of rejection by making at least one crazy request a day for 100 days was throttled last week when a Krispy Kreme employee accepted his order for five doughnuts linked together in the colors and shape of the Olympic symbol.

"It's only my third day and I have already failed," Jia Jiang wrote on his 100 Days of Rejection Therapy blog. "But I did so with such amazement and happiness."

When the 31-year-old approached the register to make his "specialized" doughnut order, Jackie Braun, a shift leader at an Austin, Texas, Krispy Kreme, asked him when he would need it.

"In the next 15 minutes," Jiang replied.

"I was honestly just hoping for a 'no' and to go home," Jiang told Yahoo News in an interview on Monday.

(Krispy Kreme)

Instead, Braun spent several minutes using the back of some receipt paper to diagram the unusual order.

"Let me see what I can do," she said.

Fifteen minutes later, she emerged with a Krispy Kreme box with the glazed Olympic ring arrangement inside?and, astonishingly, did not charge Jiang for it.

"It wasn't exactly what he wanted," Braun told Yahoo News. "To my eyes, it wasn't perfect, so I didn't think I should charge him for it. It was the best I could do in the time allotted."

"Wow, Jackie, I'm a fan," Jiang told her, on behalf of everyone in America.

"I was overwhelmed, I couldn't believe it," Jiang said. "I went home and tweeted to Krispy Kreme and blogged about it. I wanted the world to know about what she did."

A campaign to get Braun a raise and promotion was quickly launched in the YouTube comments section underneath Jiang's video.

"Jackie is awesome," more than one viewer wrote. "The world needs more people like her."

"Yo, if Krispy Kreme doesn't promote her to CEO I'm boycotting!" wrote another. "And I love doughnuts."

Jiang, who launched a Facebook page called "Give Jackie at Krispy Kreme a Raise," said he returned to Krispy Kreme on Sunday to thank Braun for going above and beyond the call of doughnut duty.

Braun, though, said she didn't do anything out of the ordinary.

"It was a simple thing," Braun, who's been with Krispy Kreme for five years, said. "The Olympic symbol was the only unusual part, because they're not on TV right now. But we do orders like that every day. We're here to make people happy."

Global Entrepreneurship Week comes to Bhutan | Youth Business ...

By Ewan Gaffney: YBI Communications Manager

?

As well as hosting? Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) in the UK? from our network team HQ in London, Youth Business International lives? up to its name during the week, with our? members around the world hosting the campaign in a further 10 countries.

From Bhutan to Barbados, GEW is a natural fit for YBI programmes which are used to supporting and promoting entrepreneurship throughout the year. In 2012 there was a huge variety of GEW activity ?going on right around the world. Not to mention our ?Around the world, around the clock? campaign which highlighted the fact? that at any given moment of the day, somewhere a? YBI entrepreneur is hard at work building and growing their business.

Aside from all this, there was one campaign that really caught our attention this year. That was the inaugural Global Entrepreneurship Week in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

I was lucky enough to visit Bhutan, and the YBI member there, earlier this year. I wrote about my trip on this blog. YBI is represented in the country by the Loden Entrepreneurship Programme (LEP), and it was during an accreditation visit that I introduced them to GEW, and suggested that they might be interested in becoming the local host organisation. With GEW activity in 125 countries and counting, there are less and less nations without a host, so taking this responsibly is a great way for LEP to make even deeper connections? with the global entrepreneurship community.

With some encouragement from YBI, LEP set about organising its first week of GEW events in early 2012.

Having seen the excellent work that LEP does to support young entrepreneurs on the ground in Bhutan, I was concerned that the responsibility of hosting the campaign should not detract from their main goal of providing close and on-going support to entrepreneurs.? LEP has approved 12 businesses for funding from a group of over 80 this year. These businesses will all receive an interest free loan and on-going mentoring.?With all this work going on, my suggestion to my colleagues in Bhutan was to start small, get a feel for the GEW campaign and expand the portfolio of events gradually.

Bhutanese Labour Minster addresses the launch of GEW in Bhutan

The launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week in Bhutan took place in the historic Clock Tower Square

I?needn?t?have worried. Last week my colleague Dorji emailed me over the itinerary for the week. In typical Bhutanese fashion,?LEP have excelled themselves with the minimum of fuss.? The first ever GEW in Bhutan included:? TV and radio coverage, a speech from a government minister and the attendance of a member of the Royal Family. There are lots of well-established GEW campaigns around the world that would love to achieve that level of exposure.

LEP activities included a series of training sessions and seminars that focused on practical topics like accounting, social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship in the context of the national measurement of Gross National Happiness (GNH), the Bhutanese equivalent of GDP.

The centrepiece of the week was an entrepreneurship fair, held in the central Clock Tower Square. The campaign and the fair were officially opened here by HRH Ashi Deki Yangzom Wangchuk, who addressed the audience about the importance of developing an entrepreneurial mind-set within Bhutanese society amd within the framework of?Buddhist teachings?; something the LEP is taking a leading role in doing. ??

?As Buddhists and responsible human beings, it is also important we work hard not just out of greed to amass wealth and derive profit but to be productive citizens so that you can help both yourself and the people around you.? Her excellent speech is worth reading in its?entirety.

Chief guest and the minister with orange scarf

The guest of honour HRH Ashi Deki Yangzom Wangchuk addresses guests at the launch of GEW in Bhutan

The gathering, set under a traditional tented covering and framed by the majestic backdrop of Bhutanese mountains, was also addressed by Dr Karma Phuntso, one of the founders of LEP. Dr Karma spoke of how important it was for Bhutan to ?develop and promote a new and vibrant culture of entrepreneurship and enterprise? and his pride at being able to ?join some 125 countries around the world to celebrate and promote the culture of innovation and enterprise, intelligence and integrity.?

Despite the high profile launch event, the highlight of the week must have been be the formal presentation of certificates to the 12 entrepreneurs whose business plans had proven robust enough to be awarded funding by the LEP.

The 12 business, from sectors including farming, baking and agriculture, were chosen by a panel of experts and will go on to receive an interest free loan, training, mentoring and on-going support from the expert team at Loden. For them this is the beginning of an exciting journey into the world of entrepreneurship.

Speaking about the triple pronged support Loden and other YBI members offer, Director of the Foundation Gerard Tardy said, ?So this is the type of help we try to give. We don?t think that a loan in a way is most important. What we try to do is provide a lot more help, in terms of training, appointing mentors. So for each project there is one local mentor and one international mentor.?

Here?s to a bright future for Global Entrepreneurship Week, and entrepreneurship in general,? in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon.

You can see the full list of GEW activities on the?Loden website.

Ryan L. Kirkland Memorial Scholarship for Nursing Students

Amount: $500

Ryan Lawrence Kirkland graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. Following a brief tour for the State of Alaska as a scientific observer on commercial fishing boats, he taught science in the public school system for four years. Ryan was passionate about education, science, and people. It was only natural when he decided to return to school to become a Registered Nurse. He entered the RN program at Paul D. Camp Community College in August 2006. His ready smile, sense of humor, dedication to study, and caring for others quickly earned the trust and respect of his classmates and college faculty. He was elected President of the Class of 2008.

Ryan loved people and accepted them as they were, no questions asked. He was always ready to lend his support to any project, problem, or cause. On March 21, 2007, Ryan died in a car accident. His time here was short, but he will never be forgotten. Ryan?s classmates said it best at their capping ceremony when they read a poem in his memory called ?The Dash? by Linda Ellis. The poem affi rms a simple truth: On a tombstone, you will see a date of birth and a date of death, but what is really important is how the Dash was spent between those years.
