From the heavy cordless phones of the 1980s to today?s smart phones, cell phone technology has undergone an incredible transformation. But have you ever wondered how your well-intentioned call to the world with the use of a mobile phone? They also have knowledge of important features such as WAP and GPRS for mobile phones and service providers. But you should be about what they do really mean?
There are many mobile technologies. So the next time you buy a phone, you need to know what technologies are available, there are.
Generations of mobile communication systems
In the 1970s, the first generation (1G) of mobile communication is introduced, it was used mainly for voice transmission. Second generation (2G) emerged in the 1990s and was designed to include 2.5G, advanced technologies such as TDMA, GSM and CDMA. These technologies have been used for voice and data.
The next generation of mobile communications is 3G data rates of 384 kbps to 2 Mbps and provides wireless interfaces such as GSM, TDMA and CDMA.
Mobile access technologies
Multiple Access Frequency Division (FDMA)
The first generation analog mobile access method used for each call, FDMA separate frequencies. For example, if there are four stations, each receive their own frequency. So there is no interference between them. It reduces interference, but limits the number of users.
Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)
TDMA allocates unique time slots to each user within each channel, allowing many users to access the radio frequency without interference from anyone. Each mobile conversation uses only a certain frequency interval.
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
Introduced commercially in 1995, by Qualcomm, CDMA quickly became one of the world?s fastest-growing wireless technologies. 3G CDMA networks provide more capacity for voice traffic with data capabilities with high speed, therefore, many mobile operators are now building or upgrading to it.
CDMA is both the 2G and 3G wireless applications. Indian mobile operator Reliance India as Mobile, Tata Indicom, BSNL and MTNL Garuda all use CDMA2000 technology and CDMA1X variant.
Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)
GSM has become the standard technology in the world for mobile communications. It is based on TDMA protocol developed in Europe. GSM provides a high level of safety standards internationally recognized technology and superior sound quality.
To work for all GSM phone, it needs a SIM (Subscriber Identity), a card that contains your telephone account information. Thus, an Indian GSM phone can be used in any part of the world.
Wireless technology platforms
1) GPRS
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is an evolution of GSM technology that integrates GSM and IP. GPRS offers Internet access at high speed. You can check your e-mail and surf the web traveling at high speed. Currently BPL Mobile and Hutch (Orange in Mumbai) offer GPRS services in India.
2) WAP
In this age of high technology, business must always have access to the network. This is where WAP This facilitates access to the Internet from mobile phones. This is an open standard for wireless protocols, which is independent of service providers. The phone must display a WAP browser, web-content. Today, cell phones often come equipped with WAP and GPRS.
WAP and GPRS also the users to download games, send e-mail and even your messages on your PC.
3) EDGE
The new EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Environment) interface has been developed specifically to meet the bandwidth needs of 3G. This technology is supported by Ericsson, it also offers high-speed data transmission over GSM networks with just a software upgrade for the handset. EDGE allows speeds of up to 384kbps.
