Astronomers Catch Video of 'Near-Miss' Asteroid

A small asteroid called 2012 KT₄₂ came within three Earth radii of striking the planet on 29 May, but slipped past. The event was the sixth-closest encounter of any recorded asteroid.

In a video posted online on 19 June by researchers using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) in Hawaii, the bright asteroid appears fixed, while background stars zip past (in fact, the asteroid is speeding along at 17 kilometres per second). ?You get the view of riding along with it,? says Richard Binzel, a planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, who led the observations. At its closest, the asteroid was around 19,000 kilometres from Earth ? a distance between the orbit of the International Space Station (about 1 Earth radius) and that of a geosynchronous satellite (about 6 Earth radii).

Hours after the object was discovered by a small telescope on Mount Lemmon near Tucson, Arizona, Binzel was able to obtain a few hours of time on the IRTF. The resulting in-depth study was innovative for such a small object.

By determining 2012 KT₄₂'s composition and reflectivity, Binzel was able to use the brightness of the asteroid to estimate its size: about 7 metres across. He says several objects this size cross Earth?s path every year.

?

2012 KT₄₂ is now continuing on its 1.5-year elliptical orbit of the Sun. Even if it had struck Earth, Binzel says, it probably would have burned up in the atmosphere. Binzel wants to discover an object that is not big enough to present a hazard to Earth, but is large enough to be spotted in space and later found on the ground as a meteorite, as was the asteroid 2008 TC₃, which came to Earth in Sudan in October 2008 (see the 'The rock that fell to Earth'). ?I want them to be just the right size to deliver some fresh samples,? he says.

Photography For Real Estate ? The Arithmetic Of Real Estate ...

I?ve talked about this before but it?s super important so it is useful to keeping coming at the subject from different angles. It?s clear a lot of folks don?t understand this. Back in Feb I did a high level discussion of all the pricing factors you should consider. Here I want to look closer at making sure your shoot price is recovering all your costs of being in business.

First of all your shoot price has several components:

• Your fixed costs: These are all fixed costs of being in business. It?s called fixed because it doesn?t depend on how many shoots you do a year. Fixed costs are things like your gear, replacing your gear periodically, Insurance, your vehicle, your computer and software etc.
• Your variable costs: These are the costs like gas and vehicle?maintenance. They are called variable because the more shoots you do the bigger this cost is.
• Your profit: Not much?explanation needed here. You probably want to look at this from the point of view of how many hours you are putting into a shoot on the average so you know what you are getting paid per hour so you can compare it to what you may get doing something else.

So with this terminology here is the arithmetic:

Shoot price = (Fixed costs)/(average shoots per year) + Variable cost per shoot + Shoot?Profit

In real estate photography the variable costs and profit are easy to understand. Everybody understands gas and oil costs. The fixed costs are where everyone seems to have difficulty and people get confused! If you are running a sustainable business (one that will support yourself and your family with over a time frame of years) you have to recover all your fixed costs of being in business or over time you will actually loose money and perhaps you?d better find a different job. When I calculate?(Fixed costs)/(average shoots per year) +?Variable cost per shoot for me personally the number comes out to $60.86. In past posts and in my Business of Real Estate Photography eBook I call this the cost of showing up because that?s pretty much what it is, your cost to show up at the property before you start doing anything.

When I see some one with shoot prices less than $60 or not much higher than $60 it sets off alarms in my head. Sure there are variations in cost of living but I live in Salem, OR and even though it?s the capital of OR it?s a pretty rural, backward little town and the cost of living here is literally half of what it is in Seattle where I?ve spent most of my life. I now go out of my way to talk to real estate photographers who have what appear to me to be crazy low prices. Here are the situations I always find:

1. They are not recovering all their fixed costs. The don?t include costs like gear replacement every 3 or 4 years or vehicle replacement or professional insurance etc. This means that the longer they stay in business the bigger an economic hole they are getting into. So being in business is actually hurting them economically in the long run.
2. They are for, various reasons, not including all or any of the fixed costs of doing business. So they are behaving like they have low or no fixed costs. Reasons I hear are things like a) their spouse has a real job and is paying all the fixed costs, b) they are retired and don?t have to include all their fixed costs or c) they have another real job and are only doing real estate photography part time and don?t have to recover all the costs. In these cases they are picking up some extra money and are able to make their phone ring by just keeping their price?unrealistically?low.

Even though #2 is not hurting the photographers that do it is hurting all the other full time real estate photographers in their local market both now and in the future. They are effectively breaking the local real estate photography market because a) they are competing with unrealistic fixed costs and b) they are establishing unrealistic price expectations in their market. Sometimes you can spot photographers that are engaging in item 2 above because their quality is low, but not always. Once a few photographers using low prices like to make a few easy bucks it doesn?t take long before it becomes difficult or impossible for a full time real estate photographer to recover all their costs in this broken market.

8 civilians, 7 UN peacekeepers dead in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) ? Ivorian government forces will launch a military operation to hunt down the men responsible for an ambush that killed at least seven peacekeepers in an unprecedented attack on U.N. forces in the country. Officials said Saturday that at least eight civilians also were killed in the area.

Hundreds of villagers were fleeing the region near the Liberian border, though authorities were unable to confirm any additional casualties Saturday because of the remoteness of the area in southwestern Ivory Coast.

While Ivory Coast's political crisis after the November 2010 election led to violence that left some 3,000 people dead, Friday's attack was a rare assault on the United Nations, which has had a peacekeeping mission here since 2004.

"This is the first time we have ever had such a type of attack in Ivory Coast. It's a very tough time for the whole mission here right now," said Sylvie van den Wildenberg, acting spokeswoman for the U.N. mission in Ivory Coast.

An Ivorian Cabinet official who was briefed on the matter said President Alassane Ouattara requested helicopter gunships from the U.N. and expected them to arrive by Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Ivory Coast's deputy defense minister Paul Koffi Koffi said government forces, along with Liberian and U.N. forces, will launch an operation on June 15 to find the men responsible, whom he described as "militiamen or mercenaries."

Koffi Koffi said they could not respond sooner because it would take time to gather equipment and prepare the forces.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms," saying he was "saddened and outraged" about the deaths of the peacekeepers, all from Niger. He urged the government of Ivory Coast to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Later on Friday, the U.N. Security Council released a press statement condemning the attack.

Bert Koenders, the U.N. envoy to the West African nation, said the peacekeepers were part of a patrol south of the town of Tai, an area the U.N. mission recently reinforced because of threats of attacks against the civilian population. The ambush involved a large group of armed men, a U.N. official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

"Their colleagues are still in danger," Ban told reporters. "Even tonight, after the attack, more than 40 peacekeepers remain with the villagers in this remote region to protect them from this armed group."

The mayor of Tai, Desire Gnonkonte, told AP that hundreds of villagers were fleeing the area.

Van den Wildenberg said several vehicles were on a reconnaissance patrol near the village of Para on the southern axis of Tai to follow up on "rumors of movement of armed people in the area and threats on the security of civilians."

"There were several vehicles on the patrol and the leading vehicles were strongly hit," van den Wildenberg said. "The area is densely forested and very tough terrain."

Once a stable nation, the world's largest cocoa producer was split into a rebel-controlled north and government-controlled south after an attempted coup sparked civil war in 2002. A peace deal in March 2007 brought key rebel leaders into the administration and offered hope for a single government after years of foundering accords and disarmament plans.

But the country headed to the brink of civil war after a presidential runoff in early 2011 when then-president Laurent Gbagbo refused to concede defeat after losing to Ouattara, the internationally recognized winner of the election. Gbagbo was arrested with the help of U.N. and French forces in April 2011, and is now facing charges of war crimes at The Hague. Ouattara was sworn in as president soon after.

Following Gbagbo's arrest, many of the mercenaries and militiamen who fought for him fled across the porous border into Liberia's forests, or clandestinely, into its refugee camps.

Western Ivory Coast has remained particularly unstable, and Human Rights Watch said earlier this week that armed groups in Liberia who supported Gbagbo have killed at least 40 civilians in cross-border raids into Ivory Coast since July. The deaths have all been near Tai, Human Rights Watch said.

"In the four cross-border attacks since June 2011, the motivation appears to have been both political vengeance and related to land conflict - issues that overlap in Ivory Coast's volatile west. Those killed or whose houses were burned predominantly belong to ethnic groups that largely voted for president Ouattara," the group said in its report.

Matt Wells, West Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, told AP that the organization hasn't confirmed details of the attack but "pro-Gbagbo militants have conducted repeated raids from Liberia into this region of Ivory Coast."

"The Gbagbo camp often resorted to inciting rhetoric against U.N. personnel during the Ivorian crisis, though today's deadly attack is the first of its kind during the recent Ivorian crisis," Wells said

"Liberian and Ivorian authorities need to quickly work together to bring to account those involved in this heinous act," he said.

At the end of April, the U.N. said there were about 9,400 peacekeeping troops, 200 military observers and 1,350 international police in the mission along with civilian staff. Over 40 countries are contributing military personnel.

Contraception Prevents More Than Babies ? Complementarian Loners

There has been a lot of information from different sources about the impact of contraception on our world, upon relationships, upon the women?s psychology & physiology, and upon the bonding & choice of mates. Roissey has even written about this.

I will make a strident assertion: A man and a woman cannot develop a great relationship if contraception is part of it or if they met while she was using hormonal artificial birth control. REAL committed, trusting, exclusive sexual intercourse is essential.

This is way more than a religious assertion. It backed by studies and science, although research is discouraged and the information is trivialized or repressed.

Recently I heard a story about a good woman that could not let go of her necessity to not have another child. Yet she was a single mother and strongly desired to find a man to bond to. The discussion of boundaries and full trust, acceptance and commitment did not happen. (Such discussion is often explicit and arousing. Christians wrongly avoid such and conflate arousal with lust.) The result was not what she longed for; it seems that avoidance of the discussion contributed to the act that was not discussed since possibly it would have caused an ?occasion of sin? or lead to ?impure thoughts.? She is still single and unclaimed, she is now discouraged about relationships.

Frank discussions about boundaries did not occur and each withheld from the other while seeking a relationship. She withheld her fertility and so she easily succumbed. He withheld his commitment because it was not required.

Since we have been exposing femDOM (the overt and the subtle), let?s examine further. Birth Control is a misnomer since this is her speaking through her body saying, ?I control when I will give birth, not God, not a man.? It doesn?t require any respect for fertility since fertility is subverted. This puts the woman in the dominant position and he then determines when and under what conditions she will ACQUIRE his seed rather than being open to RECEIVE. (Is woman not a vessel?)

Usually the contraception is done by the woman, it messes with her body; she blocks the ability to receive and the whole exercise becomes taking pleasure from the other. Of course, she can always lie about taking it or not taking it. This is in essence lying with the body. A man can lie too if he withholds his gift by vasectomy or by condom.

We often hear, ?My body my choice? ? Who are YOU to say anything, YOU?RE a MAN so you don?t know what it?s like to be a WOMAN and it?s none of your business, even though it?s your child? It is women acting as succubi. And so the ultimate end of a failed attempt to block PROCREATION is abortion. After all, God surely did not do his part and create a soul for the life that she did not intend to receive, right? Does her hamster prevent God from fulfilling his part of creation? Not likely!

This is an intense post and has taken a lot of energy to write. I am left with the impression that subverting fertility may be just as much an abomination to God as is divorce.

Can men and women have what they so deeply desire (in a relationship) while withholding the central gift of self? Have Christians stopped to consider the word PROCREATION? We participate in the CREATION of God in our act of sexual intercourse. We assist in CREATION of a body, but God provides the soul. CREATION is intended to occur in conjunction with a COVENANT. Can intercourse be unitive if this element is totally removed from the act of marriage, in the one-flesh-union?

A COVENANT is an OATH, a BINDING and a COMMITMENT. This is more than a contract or a whim. The sublime pleasure of sexual intercourse cannot happen when such aspects are blocked. The kind of fulfilling sex that every person longs for and rarely experiences is also precluded when the woman endeavors to control the relationship. In order for her to feel the fullness of the union, she must be claimed in a COVENANT to one man PERMANENTLY.

When a woman is not claimed in God?s way, she is left with guilt and she beats herself up. She often withdraws and hides from the world by avoiding people. This is her conscience, which is a good. If she did not feel this, she would actually be a common slut. Since she feels regret, she has not fallen to that state. The danger is in returning to human interaction and again following the same script. In a way, her pain comes from not risking everything. So the remedy is for her to risk ALL and not block, but also to not physically unite too soon. Through this she tests a man to determine if he is fully committed and will claim her, own her, treasure her in perpetuity. She then becomes not merely a moment of pleasure but his companion for life.

Science reveals that women choose biologically similar men rather than biologically complementary men when they are hormonally changed by artificial contraception due to the state of mimicked pregnancy, which causes them to seek familiar men subconsciously.

Furthermore, succumbing to passionate desire is easier without the risk of pregnancy and therefore commitment is not essential prior to the parting of thighs. Does this ever turn out for the good?
